York County, Virginia

Located in the developing retail hub in the western portion of the Williamsburg area, this 176,000 SF high-end development is a major regional shopping destination. Anchored by Ukrop’s, Williamsburg Marketcenter has attracted major retailers such as Ross, Dollar Tree, Rack Room Shoes, Rue21, Navy Federal Credit Union, and Petco, as well as several national restaurateurs. The retail center is the second phase of development for Williamsburg Marketcenter and shares common access points and vehicular circulation with the first phase, Home Depot.

Henderson, Inc. was responsible for all general contracting and site and utility construction for the project.

Approximately 10,000 tons of concrete were crushed and re-used for foundations, sidewalks and structural support for the center. In addition, aluminum, steel, iron, copper, and dry wall were recycled and re-used.

While the topography of the site presented unique design challenges to the planning and civil engineering staff, and massive earth moving operations were required, Henderson, Inc. was able to fast track all site and utility work and essentially balanced cut and fill operations. Portions of the site are adjacent to wetlands and tributary streams that flow to Waller Mill Reservoir, the drinking water supply for much of the Williamsburg area. Due to the sensitive on-site stormwater management, Henderson, Inc. worked in collaboration with VHB, York County officials, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct the site in a manner that didn’t disturb the wetlands, tributaries, or Resource Protection Area. Elaborate and thoughtful construction sequencing resulted in erosion and sediment control during the construction process.
