Safety Director Dave Thompson Guest Speaker at PCEA Meeting
Henderson Safety Director Dave Thompson was a guest speaker at the February Membership meeting of the National Professional Construction Estimators Association of America (PCEA), Hampton Roads Chapter on Wednesday evening, February 8th.
Dave spoke about the tangible and intangible costs of safety. Safety is an unexpected cost of construction that many don’t take seriously. With more emphasis on safe working sites by the customer, the cost is not just in the training required, but the effort to ensure that each and every project and construction company has a clean safety slate.
Dave also spoke about the changes in the various enforcement groups (OSHA, VOSH, SCC) and their new policies towards penalties and fines. These recent changes in enforcement policies can potentially drive costs up considerably to maintain the appropriate level of safety oversight on a project.
Most of Dave’s discussion was focused on the concept that it is always cheaper in the long run to start with a safety program rather than try to pay for the consequences when injuries and citations start occurring.
