Leslie H. Schultz and Her Involvement in the YMCA

I have had the privilege to serve on the R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA Board of Directors since 2007, however my experience with the YMCA started much earlier than that. My first memories are from the 90's when Henderson, Inc. was selected as the General Contractor on our first YMCA project. Over the last two decades, Henderson has built numerous YMCA projects and more importantly prospered many friendships and long lasting relationships. Although we operate under different business plans, our guiding principles and core values are synchronized which streamlines our actions and thoughts to better serve our community needs.

I had the privilege of joining the Board at a very exciting time - Henderson was constructing the new R. F. Wilkinson YMCA facility right down the street from our office. At that point in my life, I knew enough about the YMCA to know that there was something special about the Y and I wanted to be a part of it. So, needless to say I humbly accepted the Board opportunity and was excited to get involved.

Six years later, I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every last meeting, special event, and dollar raised! With this said, my journey is not over – I now enter 2012 as Chairman of the Board, and have never been so excited! We are at a pivotal point for our local YMCA with many opportunities awaiting us. I am fortunate to be surrounded by many of our peers within the community that are going to help take our YMCA to the next level.

Unfortunately, it is my belief that too many people within our community do not fully understand the charitable mission of the YMCA. As Chair, it is my goal to lead our board in educating our community to understand their purposeful mission. At the Y, strengthening our community is our cause. Through a strong alliance of staff, members, and volunteers, we share in the commitment to nurture the potential of kids, and promote a healthy lifestyle while fostering a sense of social responsibility.

Financial assistance is key – program fees do not cover the full cost of our vital community programs or provide assistance so that no one is denied a chance to participate because of an inability to pay. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We count on the generosity of our members and community to help people of all ages be healthier, confident, connected and secure. Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us the most. When you give to the Y, your gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood.

In closing, when people ask me about the YMCA and the Board – I frequently refer to the Board as my "Feel Good Board." I can honestly say that I walk away from every board meeting or special event feeling so good! To know that you are helping make a difference in lives everyday is extremely exhilarating! I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute and ultimately make our community a better place to live and work. At the end of my term, I hope to be able to look back and know I helped make a difference.
