What are you passionate about in the construction industry?
I’ve always enjoyed watching our team develop and grow with the opportunities that are placed in front of them.
What is something unique about Henderson?
Henderson sponsors beverages at VACRE Golf Tournament
Henderson sponsored a beverage station at the Virginia Association for Commercial Real Estate (VACRE) golf tournament at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club on October 3, 2011. Golfers from the Commonwealth’s commercial real estate industry spent a day networking and golfing at the famed golf club in Williamsburg.
Henderson raffled off a TaylorMade Ghost putter and one dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls at the tournament. The lucky winner was Jeff Parana of Potomac Development Group!
And the winner is...
Earlier this month the “Gauntlet” was thrown down and a challenge was issued: the team with the fastest average time in the 2nd Annual Williamsburg Landing 5k to support The Arc of Greater Williamsburg on Saturday, September 24th would be declared the winner and awarded a trophy and limitless bragging rights.
Henderson was proud to have 34 employees participate in the 5k and take up the challenge. The teams were Building, Office, and Site/Utility.

Growing up, were you always interested in joining your family business at Henderson, Inc.?
Yes, I was intrigued, but actually I started out going to school for Exercise Physiology. Then as I spent summers at Henderson, Inc. doing internships, I realized I had a real interest in the business and I changed my major to business. I always knew there would be an opportunity IF I was interested, however, my parents NEVER pushed it on me. They allowed me to ultimately figure out that the construction industry is where I belonged.
Henderson Day of Caring
On Thursday, September 15, Henderson participated in the Greater Williamsburg United Way’s 19th Annual Day of Caring.
The Day of Caring Rally and Campaign Kick-Off started at 7:30 am at the Historic Triangle Community Service Building. Volunteers enjoyed donations of coffee and food as well as healthy snacks to take to their project sites.
As part of the Day of Caring, Henderson was able to assist a neighbor agency with a project that would not normally be completed for lack of money and manpower.
The Mid-Atlantic Construction Economic Update
The Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) Central Virginia Chapter presented “The Mid-Atlantic Construction Economic Update” on Thursday, September 8th at the Holiday Inn Airport in Richmond, VA.
Vice President of Federal Operations James M. Neilson, DBIA
How did you get involved in the construction industry?
I started designing things in High School. In my second year at Clemson University, one of my professors convinced me my talents were best applied to building construction as opposed to design. I changed my major from Architecture to Building Science. That summer I found my first field job and never looked back. 15 years later I went back to Clemson and thanked that professor.
How did you get involved in the Federal side of the construction industry?
Henderson sponsored a booth at 2011 megaVENTION on Thursday, August 25 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
The event kicked off with a golf tournament and cocktail reception at The Princess Anne Country Club on Wednesday, August 24th. President Bill Strack, his wife Emily, and Vice President Mike Van Sickel attended the reception.
Caroline Kelley and Laura Coletrane staffed the booth on Thursday, networking and collecting business cards for Henderson’s iPod Touch and iTunes gift card give-a-way. Berkeleigh Combs of Odell was the lucky winner! Congratulations Berkeleigh!
