Henderson presents at DBIA June meeting
Henderson President Bill Strack, along with Guernsey Tingle Architects (GTA) President Tom Tingle, AIA, and Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) Director of Engineering Bruce Husselbee, P.E., gave a presentation on the recently completed HRSD North Shore Maintenance Facility project at the June DBIA meeting on Tuesday, June 26 in Virginia Beach.
Beyond the Building Committee Progress Report

As previously mentioned, the Beyond the Building (BTB) committee was formed to work on various ways to enhance Henderson and address the majority concerns of our employees.
Thus far, the committee has sponsored a cornhole tournament event, and made some changes to the safety drawing. We are currently working hard on developing a Mentorship Program for our company and brainstorming various other topics as well.
HRACRE 20th Annual Golf Outing
Henderson, Inc. was a Gold Sponsor of HRACRE’s Golf Outing at Williamsburg National Golf Course on Thursday, June 14. Henderson also sponsored a beverage cart at the tournament.
Henderson’s foursome, including Vice President Mike Van Sickel, shot a score of 57 (-15) and tied for first place in their flight. After matching up the scorecards Henderson’s team ended up third in the four-man captain’s choice format tournament.
Cove Cafe Grand Opening
Williamsburg Landing hosted a grand opening event at the recently renovated Cove Café on Tuesday, June 5. Henderson, Inc. was in attendance to support and congratulate our client and enjoy the cocktails and hors d'oeuvres that were prepared in the newly renovated kitchen.
Inaugural Beyond the Building Cornhole Tournament
Henderson’s Beyond the Building Committee hosted its Inaugural Cornhole Tournament on Thursday, May 10 at Henderson’s office in Williamsburg.
About 50 employees participated in the tournament and enjoyed an afternoon of friendly competition, grilled food and cold drinks. The tournament was played in a double elimination team format. First place went to Tommy Carawan and Jason Muniz and they each received a $50 American Express card as their prize.
Busch Gardens Open Haus
Busch Gardens hosted an Open Haus on May 23rd for Henderson and all of our subcontrators that worked on the park’s newest roller coaster, Verbolten. The Open Haus allowed everyone to bring a guest and ride Verbolten and Mach Tower, play games, and enjoy a complimentary dinner at Festhaus!
Henderson, combined with our subcontractors and guests, had approximately 600 people come out and enjoy the evening in the park. Everyone had a great time enjoying these two attractions on which Henderson was the general contractor.
Stone House Preschool Field Trip
Henderson, Inc. was happy to welcome children from Stone House Preschool in Williamsburg, Va. for a field trip on May 9th and 10th. The field trip was a part of their transportation and construction themed learning during the month of May.
Mike Van Sickel Attains National Design-Build Certification
Vice President Mike Van Sickel has successfully completed the requirements for the nationally recognized Assoc. Designated Design-Build Professional™ certification (Assoc. DBIA™). The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) awarded designated status to Mike upon his successful completion of coursework and formal examination in all aspects of design-build project delivery. By completing these requirements, successful candidates earn the right to display “Assoc.
Surf Rider Restaurant at Whitehouse Cove Marina Opens
Henderson is proud to announce the opening of the new Surf Rider restaurant, located at Whitehouse Cove Marina in Poquoson, VA. City officials joined owner/developers, contractors and the public for a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 17th. This is the 8th Surf Rider in the Hampton Roads area.
The four-month project consisted of a 6,000 SF building to include a 1,200 SF covered outdoor patio. The building sits on timber piles while overlooking the marina. Visitors are able to access the restaurant by boat, through the Whitehouse Cove waterway.
Colonial Heritage 5k
On Saturday, May 5th Henderson had a team of 30 runners and walkers participate in the Colonial Heritage 5k. The 5k was run through Colonial Heritage Active Adult Community in Williamsburg, Virginia, an ongoing Henderson job site.
Vice President Mike Van Sickel, Project Manager Jordan Anglin, and Business Development Coordinator Caroline Kelley all received awards for placing in the top three in their age groups.
