Kutztown University Marine Science Consortium Complex achieves LEED Silver certification

Phase III of Henderson’s Kutztown University Marine Science Consortium Complex project on Wallops Island, Virginia recently achieved LEED Silver certification. Henderson was the general contractor on this multi-phase project.

64 The Consortium is a residential environmental learning center and field station comprised of several member universities, some of which include East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown University, West Virginia University, California University of Pennsylvania, Lock Haven University, and Slippery Rock University.

Phase III was a 23,000 square foot laboratory classroom building and the related site work. The Education Center houses the Marine Science Consortium’s wet labs, classrooms, computer lab, bookstore and administrative offices. It can accommodate gatherings of up to 100 people as well as many types of educational disciplines.

Sustainable features that contributed to the project’s certification include 33,595 square feet of dedicated open space, a stormwater management plan that results in no net increase in runoff, 59% of non-roof impervious surfaces were paved with highly reflective materials and non-colored concrete, installation of dual flush water closets, low flush urinals, and low-flow lavatories, and Henderson recycled 75% of construction waste.

Earlier Phases included construction of a new 4,200 square foot Maintenance Building and extensive site work for the entire campus to include site utilities and multiple building demolition, and construction of a new 23,800 square foot, Pre-College Dormitory and related site work.
